Athlete of the Month: AJ Carlick

AJ joined 6S over 1 year ago, and in such a short time, has left a significant mark on our entire community. AJ embodies all that we’re about at 6S – respect, hard work, inclusiveness, determination and FUN! AJ will be one of the first to greet you in class, to cheer you on during a workout, to help out around the gym and at different social events – the list goes on! AJ is one of the hardest workers we know – from doubling up on hockey games and open workouts, to crushing hero WODS to show support and respect for those who have saved and given their lives for others, AJ will get it done!
There are so many highlights from the last year, but some that stand out to us include: two CrossFit open seasons, each where AJ was a positive role model and leader in the community, staying late to help judge and clean up even if they didn’t do the workout; and UG series/beach WOD, where AJ naturally fell into a leadership role and guided their team throughout each workout. Even if it meant putting in extra work or volunteering their time, AJ wouldn’t think twice – helping others comes naturally. Nonetheless, AJ has been putting in the extra work and has crushed PRs on the barbell and with bodyweight movements like pistols, despite battling a recent ankle injury. While this setback might have disappointed a lot of people, AJ met the challenge with optimism – a common theme for AJ.

If AJ isn’t crushing workouts in the gym, they are helping other people crush their goals and making others smile. AJ gives everything their best effort and we could not ask for anything more!

We are so lucky to have such a kind-hearted, genuine, hard-working member and friend at 6S & we can’t wait to see what this year has in store!

Tell us about yourself.
Hi I’m AJ, I guess you probably know I do CrossFit, I have a partner named Grace and a very sweet dog named Zadie. We also have a cat named Neville that Dave would scold me for if I didn’t mention. I identify as non binary and use they/them pronouns and am passioante about feminist and LGBT+ issues. I’m a firefighter, first aid instructor, avid soccer fan and former elite level soccer player. I’m very close with my brother who lives in England and my parents who don’t totally get what CrossFit is. I love the outdoors, my friends and finishing a to do list.  I’m pretty outgoing but also very competitive so if you’ve thought I look intimidating and haven’t said hi it’s just my resting lift face.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I have seen every episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I started at CrossFit 6S in May 2018.

Why did you start CrossFit?
I was starting a job as a firefighter and had previously had a concussion which meant I hadn’t worked out for a while. I was looking for a sort of get fit quick scheme but quickly settled into loving CrossFit and stuck around.

What’s your favorite music to workout to?
At the moment, Lizzo

What is your proudest CF moment?
The first WOD I finished within the time cap!

What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
My mental health has always been something I have struggled with. 6S has given me a safe space, an escape and community to lean on and celebrate with good and bad. I’m more self aware and in tune with my body. I feel better prepared as a firefighter than ever before. I’ve met some of my best friends at 6S and feel lucky to have something else Grace and I can do together!

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
I hang out with my dog Zadie and my lovely partner Grace. I love playing hockey and soccer, spending time with friends and watching sports (usually the Montreal Canadiens and TFC). Oh and watching Jeopardy!

What was the best advice you were ever given?
To slow down and believe in myself

Who inspires you?
Every female firefighter I have ever met, especially Deryn Rizzi.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What colour would you be and why?
Probably a shade of teal, it’s my favourite colour but a very specific shade that is yet to exist in crayon form.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?
Spice Girls for sure.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?
Eddie Bauer

What was your favorite TV show growing up? Why?
The Simpsons because I felt cool watching it with my older brother.

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
Always Hungry

What’s the strangest talent you have?
I’m really good at tying knots.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Finish a New York Times crossword, climb Mt. Kilamanjaro and deliver a baby.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Teleportation, I despise traffic.
