Athlete of the Month: Hector Alamillo

I don’t think you could find a more genuine guy than Hector. If you’ve met him, you know what I mean. He’s always smiling, no matter what he’s doing, always willing to try something new, and always just a pleasure to coach and be around. I’ve only been working with him a short time on the fitness side of the gym, and more personally through the pandemic with his at home training, but he’s been a 6Ser for years (2.5 to be exact!) predominantly with Hanks Powerlifting.
Hector’s enthusiasm is contagious. He’s humble as well. Hanks Powerlifting probably know him best, as he’s a big lifter over there. When he started with them back in 2018, his back squat was 225lbs. Now he squats 470lbs, has a 351lbs bench press, and a 500lbs deadlift. Put him on the fitness side of the gym, and we’re working on simple handstand shapes, getting more comfortable with body weight movements, and working cardiovascular endurance. While heavy lifting may be his wheelhouse, he’s always open to these new challenges and takes them on with a smile.

I’d like to say that Hector is a staple in our 6S community, and I know other coaches would agree. It’s athletes like him that make our space feel like home, welcoming, and an all around positive place to be. We can’t wait to see Hector progress in his strength and fitness, and are so grateful to have people like him a part of our 6S Fam!

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I used to be a long distance runner!

Why did you start Crossfit/Powerlifting?
I got into lifting weight because I wasn’t very good at running; I found out pretty soon I had a knack at lifting stuff. After a few years of being a regular gym rat, I hear about powerlifting. When I moved to Toronto, I found 6S Fitness and sent Coach Adam an email asking if the program would be right for me! I started lifting with Hanks and competing. A little later, the Open and Underground Throwdown comps lured me into trying to get a little more fit so I’ve been doing a little more than just SBD these days!

What’s your favorite music to workout to?

Honestly, for long workouts, I do podcasts or even like a musical playlist – the narrative helps me zone out and focus on the story. For quick pumps or big lifts, hype rock songs.

What is your proudest 6S moment?
Being a part of the culture. Some of my favorite moments of the past few years have been with the gym and to be a part of contributing to that is awesome. I’ve lost weight and gotten stronger but somehow I think losing 5 lbs or nailing a 5 lb PR Wouldn’t have felt as good without the people at 6S.

Other than CrossFit/Powerlifting, what do you do for fun?
I’ve been studying and working the past few years so I don’t have a ton of extra free time after the gym. When I’m done studying, I want to learn an instrument – I’m thinking maybe a cello!
2 Truths and a lie about you:
– I used to be in an acapella band!
– I play dungeons and dragons!
– I was a decathlete in high school!

At which store would you like to max-out your credit car?
Guitar Center or a fitness place that could build me the ultimate home gym

What was your favourite TV show growing up?
The Simpsons – it was my main source of education

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
One step at a time

What’s the strangest talent you have?
I’m decent at darts? That’s kind of strange maybe

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
– Learn a few languages
– Travel with my parents
– Go back to school

If you could have one superpower, what would you choose?
Teleportation!
