Athlete of the Month: Jennet Rozyeva

Jennet has been a member of the 6S family since January and has been a welcome addition to the community! She is continually showing up, working hard, and cheering on her peers. Jennet is an absolute pleasure to have in classes, whether it be nailing those burpees in 6SFit, or lifting inspirational weights in Hank’s Powerlifting! Jennet recently competed in Hanks LiftOff and absolutely crushed it! Keep up the great work Jennet, and we look forward to see how you inspire us all next!

Tell us about yourself.

I’m originally from Turkmenistan, and have grown up living in various countries before moving to Canada in 2013. This year was my first time spending all summer and winter in Toronto – so it was nice to fully see what the city has to offer. I get easily bored, so my job (in Emergency Management) is perfect for my type although the stress can be a little too much. I love being active and when I moved to the current neighborhood I was excited to find out that there was a crossfit gym nearby – now 6s is where I spend a good 8-10 hours of my life each week, with no regrets.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?

I don’t see well and refuse to wear contacts/glasses, so if I seem to be staring at you please know that I’m trying to figure out if I’m looking at someone or a moving object is about to hit me (reason I don’t miss soccer or ultimate frisbee).

How long have you been doing Functional Fitness? At 6S?

I joined crossfit end of February of this year, then was enticed by a fellow members’ performance and joined powerlifting in July – sadly can’t say I’m newbie anymore.

Why did you start functional fitness training?

I needed an outlet and want to get in shape, but I got so much more out of joining this gym – so thankful to the coaches, fellow members and being part of this community.

What is your favorite music to workout to?

This is such a hard question to answer – my music taste is super eclectic and totally depends on my mood. I will say my current go-to to get pumped are: 5Years by Mountain Bird, Die For You by Grabbitz, Rise above it by I Prevail, Brand New Kids by Boston Manor, Rise by League of Legends

What is your proudest 6S moment?

Too many to count! I was going to write about waking up for the 6.30am class but I think it’s showing up to the classes with burpee metcons – absolutely despise burpees.

What impact has 6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?

Inside the gym – understanding my potential and finding out I am stronger than I think I am (thanks Coach Kevin and Coach Darcy!)

Outside the gym – confidence and secretly knowing I can deadlift my brother

For someone just starting at 6S, what advice would you give them?

Keep showing up, even when you don’t feel like – do this for yourself and be patient with the process.

What’s your biggest health & fitness goal right now? How close are you?

I wanted to be fit and I’m fitter than when I had started so yay, although burpees is still a pain. I can do several push-ups which I was NEVER able to do so – double yay yay. I’m slowly getting in shape and I trust the process I’m in right now (thank you Alysha!). My next goals are pull ups and handstand pushups, not even going to talk about squat snatch, that may take a few years to achieve.

Other than 6S, what do you do for fun?

I cycle, a lot… Although not as much as I used to; my bicycle got stolen and have been using the city bikes since – can’t really speed on those things.

Who inspires you?

I don’t have someone constant anymore – everyday it’s whoever I’ve observed that does something selfless and/or kind.

What book are you reading right now?

Incognito by David Eagleman – super interesting and somewhat controversial read about ‘the secret lives of the brain’.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

Live off-the-grid in an island, learn acupuncture and go to India to do a vow of silence for a month.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

For the moment it’s Thailand, that is where I felt most at home and at peace. Best of my memories came from living there. I have yet to experience a lot of places so my answer may change.
