Athlete of the Month: Matt Serrick

This past April 2021, Matt celebrated his 3 year anniversary with us at 6S. Throughout the years, he’s been a quiet addition to any class, but don’t let that underestimate his work ethic. He always shows up to any class, is up for any challenge, and always gives 100%.

Throughout the gym closure due to the pandemic, Matt became a regular morning attendee at our Zoom classes. Even on those cold winter mornings in his garage, he would show up for 7am, coffee and smile in hand. Matt’s unilateral and body weight work throughout the home workouts has clearly paid off, as once he returned to the barbell, he was moving like he never missed a day!

This past winter, Matt participated in the Toronto Throwdown Competition, a virtual fitness comp open to any fitness enthusiast throughout Toronto. He competed in the Rx division and it was so great to see him show up on a weekly basis to complete those challenging workouts. Matt also recently participated in our Nutrition Challenge. He completed the challenge as our runner up winner (congrats to Matt’s partner Shawn as our winner!) and made some big changes to his nutrition!

We are so excited to have seen all that Matt has accomplished throughout the years. He is goal orientated and his determination is paying off to all the progress he has made. We’re so proud of you, Matt!

How long have you been doing Functional Fitness? At CF6S?
CF6S was my first experience with functional fitness – I hadn’t tried a class atmosphere before and wanted change up the routine and try it. I’ve been a member since 2018

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I am from Newfoundland! People are surprised when I tell them this because I’ve lost my “accent” (when I first moved to Toronto, I was constantly asked to repeat what I was saying). The accent comes back after a few drinks or if I’ve been home for vacation 🙂

What’s your favorite music to workout to?
Right now I am obsessed with “Distorted Light Beam” by “Bastille”, and anything by “The Weeknd”

What is your proudest 6S moment?
I started 6S with little experience other than dabbling here and there in the gym and personal training, so I’ve made many improvements. Probably to this point has been being consistent with kipping pull ups or any of the gymnastics movements – it’s not something I ever thought me or my body would do.

What’s your biggest fitness goal right now? How close are you?
My biggest fitness goal is consistency – trying not to worry too much about how heavy I can lift, or what the scale says (we all like to see improvement), but more about showing up and getting the work done. I’ve made significant gains with dialing in my nutrition over the last month with Alysha’s coaching.

Other than fitness, what do you do for fun?
Other than Fitness I play volleyball, curling, and badminton. And a “competitive” board gamer 🙂

What book are you reading right now?
Reading – Clinical Reasoning In Spine Pain – I’m a Chiropractor

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Bucket List: Wine tour in Italy, Yoga Retreat in Thailand, Foodie Tour in France
