Athlete of the Month – Maurissa Bell

Maurissa is the definition of a #badass lady! She joined CrossFit 6S with some previous CrossFit experience, but has always had a willingness to learn. She’ll be one of the first to cheer you on and support you in class, while crushing her own workout. Maurissa always brings her A-game and is such a ray of sunshine – you can’t miss her smile!

Despite having a ridiculously busy schedule, Maurissa always makes time for her fitness.

​Think you don’t have time to workout? Think again!

Maurissa is the definition of hard work and dedication! She competed in last year’s UG Series Beach WOD in Collingwood and naturally fell into a leadership role and led her team though each workout! She then joined the CrossFit Open/6S BBL this past fall and absolutely crushed it, both as an athlete and as a judge. Her pull-ups and handstand push-ups (among so many other movements) just keep getting better and better! Plus, in addition to regularly attending CrossFit events and classes, Maurissa is an avid runner, and manages to make time for both CrossFit and running. She recently crushed her first marathon this past fall and is prepping for her first triathlon this summer!

A natural leader, Maurissa is always willing to lend a hand to others. She is also a great example of what balance can look like – fitness and nutrition can fit seamlessly into your life. We don’t know about you, but we would pick Maurissa to be on our team, time and time again.

Maurissa: thank you for being such a warm, welcoming presence at 6S. You are such an inspiration to those around you! Keep crushing it, inside and outside of the gym!

Outgoing girl just trying to make her way in a big world!

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I am from Thunder Bay but can’t remember the last time I wore flannel.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CrossFit 6S?
I have been doing CrossFit (on and off) for 3 years / nearly 2 years at 6S.

What was your initial impression of CrossFit before you joined? How has that changed since joining 6S?
I originally joined another CrossFit gym and was very turned off to it as the gym was full of very advanced members with minimal modifications for movements that I was unable to do. Moving to 6S made CrossFit less scary and now it’s something I really enjoy.

What is your proudest CrossFit moment?
Getting HSPU! I thought this was something I’d never be able to do … turns out it’s all in the hips.


What’s your favourite music to workout to?
A little electronic dance party

For someone just starting at CrossFit 6S, what advice would you give them?
Don’t be intimidated, we all started brand new at one point – you will get there! Everything great takes a little patience and a lot of hard work. Be brave enough to start – I promise you, it’s worth it!

What’s your biggest CrossFit goal right now? How close are you?
To be able to do a strict pull up … just one!

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
I am an athlete through and through – I enjoy all sports. I run marathons, play basketball, play tennis, and plan on doing a half ironman in the next year. If it’s a competition … I’ll do it!

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Find something you like and be good at it – it will bring you far more purpose in life than doing what’s fun in the moment (words I live by).

Who inspires you?
My partner / mentor – he has taught me so much about business, life, people and love

What’s your favourite 90s jam?
Anything spice girls

At which store would you max out your credit card?
None – I hate debt!
