Athlete of the Month – Melissa Vaz

Melissa has been coming to CrossFit 6S since we first opened. She was brand new to CrossFit when she joined but was eager to learn and came through the door each day without an ego. Over the last 2 years she’s been consistent and it’s paid off! Her lifts keep going up, she keeps crushing PRs and her skills continue to improve! Go Mel! Even though she lives in Brampton, she makes it to the gym multiple times a week. Her dedication is admirable and her positive, humble attitude is a pleasure to have in the gym!

Tell us about yourself :

I started doing CrossFit a couple years ago! I also enjoy hot yoga and Pilates.  I enjoy being active, going on adventures and trying out new recipes.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?

I love baking and cake decorating and would love to own a bakery one day!

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?

I’ve been with CF6S for almost 2 years (since November 2015).

Why did you start CrossFit?

I was looking to challenge myself and improve my strength.  I also liked how the CrossFit community motivates each other and you push yourself to get the most out of your workout.

What’s your favorite music to workout to?

I like all genres of music but I prefer motivating upbeat music when I’m working out or old school hip-hop.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?

I was making my boyfriend dinner while he was at work and set off the smoke alarm not knowing that his condo security gets notified.  I then get a call from him and he asked what I was doing and I tried to play it off and say not much just cleaning and then he asked why is security calling me about the smoke alarm going off at my place… did you burn the place down? I had no clue that security gets notified and I was embarrassed also because when I told him I was going to make us dinner earlier that day, he actually said  “I hope you don’t burn the place down”. Oops! And no, I didn’t burn the salmon, it was just well done. 🙂

What is your proudest CF moment?

When I recently hit a 1RM squat clean of 80lbs.

What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?

It’s improved my overall lifestyle; I pay attention to my health and gained new lifestyle habits since I joined CF6S.  I’m not a morning person but I find that I have more energy and stamina in the morning compared to the past.

For someone just starting at CF6S, what advice would you give them?

If I can do it, anyone can! I remember when I first started and I could barely lift a 25lb bar and would use a PVC pipe instead. Gradually I started to gain more strength and started to push myself harder (with the support of our awesome coaches) and I’ve made progress! Haha.  My advice would be to stay dedicated with your workout routine and you will notice the improvement and that will motivate you to continue with the program!  I like how CrossFit can be geared for all fitness levels and you’re continuously pushing yourself and there’s no end to your results.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

Travelling in general, go surfing and see the northern lights are just some of the things on my long bucket list.

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?

I enjoy going on hikes, hanging out with friends and my sisters, reading a good book, baking/cake decorating, and painting.

2 Truths and a lie about you:

I enjoy gaming, I’m usually late, I’m a lefty
