Athlete of the Month – Shujoy Sinha

Everyone at the gym knows Shujoy! He’s dabbled in both the evening and morning classes, until settling in to the 7am class during the week. Despite his busy work schedule, Shujoy never misses out on a workout. If he does, he will be the first to tell you how unhappy he is about it!

Before joining 6S, Shujoy had already transformed his life and created good habits. That trend continued to blossom with us, and after joining the CrossFit program, dialing in his nutrition with Food for 6S, managing and recovering from minor injuries, it’s safe to say that Shujoy is a force to be reckoned with! Shujoy’s thirst for knowledge is unique – he is patient and understands that progress takes time; he wants to master a movement before loading more weight; he values and listens to every cue a coach gives him; and he records, analyzes and learns from his movement patterns.

Even though Shujoy has battled through a few injuries, that did not stop him! He worked closely with OHFast Performance Therapists to identify the root cause of the injury and devise the best plan for recovery. He was patient, did his exercises and modified as needed, which results in a fast recovery. His optimism is evident in all aspects of his life, and particularly in the gym. He continually sets goals and will put in the work needed to achieve them.

Shujoy is a great example of what patience, consistency, dedication and hard work looks like! We’re so proud of how far you have come, Shujoy & can’t wait to see what this year has in store for you!

Tell us about yourself.
Management Consultant by profession. I was born and raised in India, hold a bachelors in mechanical engineering and an MBA. Recently moved to Toronto with my wife (well 10 months ago). Canada is my 5th country of residence. I grew up loving physics and dream about returning to it some day. I am very passionate about environment protection and adore animals. I firmly believe that one is sum total of all the experiences they have and hence I never say no to trying new things, meeting new people, exploring new places.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I used to be 55kg until 2010 with no exercise and my diet consisted of cheesy pizza (YES! One entire pizza a day) without gaining a pound.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I joined CrossFit 6S around May 2018. However, my CrossFit journey started in June 2016.

Why did you start CrossFit?
A doctor mentioned that I needed HIIT for my health, one of my coworkers was a die-hard CrossFit enthusiast and I never heard the end of it. Finally decided to try it. I couldn’t do a single air squat in my first trial class and thought that my body should be able to do at least that much. Few months down the line ended up falling in love with it.

What’s your favorite music to workout to?
AC/DC – Highway to Hell

What’s your favorite workout?
Anything that involves Snatches (SQUAT!!) and Cleans

What is your proudest CF moment?
It actually happened a few months ago. I have been trying for 2 years to get a single ring dip. Decided to stay back after a class and try it, ended up getting 5 strict ring-dips.

What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
Well, my entire day revolves around CF6S, I have started waking up at ungodly hours (for which I sleep early). I plan my day and work around sleeping early so that I am fresh for the morning workout. I am trying to dial in my nutrition and working through a lot of recovery workout. Most importantly, I have figured out how to use the TTC Pass 2 hour window effectively. Inside the box, the biggest change for me has been to get the mindset of pushing myself and approaching each workout with a plan. I used to be very apprehensive of attempting Rx weights or reps. Earlier I used to dislike finishing last in the class or with significantly lower reps when compared to others. This led to not attempting all the reps at recommended weights. However, the crew at CF6S and the coaches are super supportive. They helped me get over that mindset – as Dave says “just put in the work, leave the rest to me”

For someone just starting at CF6S, what advice would you give them?
Focus on form and give it 3 months!

What’s your biggest CF goal right now? How close are you?
Gymnastics has been my weakest area. Anything that involves hanging (Pull-ups, C2B, etc.) are just hard for me. The goal is to get 1 muscle up by the end of this year. I am nowhere close to it!

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
I watch a lot of movies (almost every movie that releases in a week)

Who inspires you?
It is honestly a hard question to address. While different people inspire me for different things – Currently the Indian Cricket team captain (Virat Kohli) is someone I am inspired by. His aggression on the field and discipline towards training & nutrition outside the field is just amazing!

Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?
Hands down Batman – he is smart, resourceful and resilient

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?
Nike!

What was your favorite TV show growing up? Why?
I am very embarrassed to admit, it was “I dream of Genie”. I think it was because this was the first show I really followed as a teen – I remember watching it daily after school!

What’s the strangest talent you have?

I can touch the tip of my nose with my tongue

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
Adopt a dog, travel the world, and play with Pandas

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Easy – teleportation. I hate sitting in airplanes, I would love to magically appear in places.
