Meet Coach Joe

I am Joe, a new coach at 6S!
To understand my coaching philosophy, you might want to understand how my fitness journey brought me here.

Growing up in Sault Ste Marie, I was involved in various sports, from track to volleyball to soccer. I loved being active and part of a team. Eventually, I moved to Guelph, to pursue my undergrad in chemistry, and I found myself dedicating more time to academics and having less and less time for fitness.  After that, I moved to Waterloo and then London to work on my graduate degrees in Chemistry, and had even less time to dedicate to fitness. This created short-term periods of motivation where I focused on my fitness and nutrition and large portions with no activity. I had a tough time finding a routine that I could stick to. After finishing up my schooling, I suddenly found I had lost my community from graduate school since many of my friends moved to different cities and I also had more free time on my hands than I was used to.

With the free time, I knew I wanted to incorporate fitness back into my life. Around the same time, I was back home visiting my family and my older sister was talking about her Crossfit gym.  She spoke about how much she enjoyed the style of class and the challenge of learning new skills, but also how great the community was.  By the end of that visit, I was convinced that when I got back home I was going join a local box.

I did and I quickly realized that my sister was right, I fell in love with not only the people there but the challenge of learning and mastering new skills in this unique environment.  Over the 4 years, I spent at that gym I made countless friends and found my confidence growing with each new skill I unlocked. I also found that the ability to take part in the competitive side of this sport is the “secret sauce” that keeps me coming back for more. This combination of elements is what keeps me motivated to go to the gym day after day, week after week, and it also pushes me to set goals and to continually improve my skills.

Naturally, one of the first things I did when I moved to Toronto was to search out a gym so I could become part of a community that I valued while doing functional fitness.  The environment and people at 6SFitness made it the perfect fit!

Now I am embarking on a new phase of my fitness journey: coaching!  I am excited to be here to combine my love of fitness with my love of teaching.  When it comes to coaching, confidence and community are the two most important things I am looking to cultivate in my classes. I look forward to helping you achieve whatever milestone you’re aiming for!
