How to Navigate Patio Season Without Derailing Your Progress
Let’s be real – patio season is one of the best parts of summer. But when you’ve got training goals and a solid routine, it can also come with a few questions:
Should I eat before I go out? How does alcohol fit into my plan? What do I even order?
We asked our Food for 6S dietitians Alysha and Max to break it down so you can enjoy the season without compromising performance, recovery, or progress.
Here’s their advice:
1. Don’t show up starving.
Snacking throughout the day helps keep hunger in check and prevents overeating when you sit down to order.
2. Check the menu ahead of time.
Look for meals that include protein and fibre. These will keep you fuller, longer—and support your training too.
3. Share a few plates.
Split a couple of dishes with friends instead of committing to one big entrée. You’ll get variety and likely a more balanced meal.
4. Pair food with alcohol.
Eating while you drink helps maintain more stable blood sugar levels—so you’ll feel better during and after your night out.
5. Leftovers are fine.
You don’t need to finish everything in one sitting. Take the rest home and fuel your next training session.
6. Zoom out.
One meal won’t make or break your goals. Balance happens over time—not in one night.
Bottom line: You don’t need to pick between fun and fitness. With a little strategy, you can enjoy both.
