Athlete of the Month – Nicole Seguin

Nicole just passed her 3 year mark with us, and what an incredible journey it has been! 3 years ago, Nicole came to us with a willingness to try something new. As an avid runner and health advocate, Nicole wanted to challenge herself and improve her overall strength for daily tasks and for her running. And that’s exactly what she has done!

In addition to maintaining a regular running schedule, Nicole attends the CrossFit group classes 2-3X/week. We’re pretty sure the only weeks she hasn’t come to the gym are when she is sick or on vacation. Otherwise, you can bet she will be in her 6:30pm evening class!

While there are so many accomplishments we can recall since Nicole first joined, there are two that stand out.

1) Progression of a burpee: Nicole has more strength in her push and hop in her step than ever before! From modified burpees to burpees over the bar, Nicole has significantly improved her ability to move her own bodyweight. As well, Nicole never expressed frustration or discontent throughout the journey – she kept working hard, listened and trusted the coaches and never gave up. 2) Wallballs: This is one of Nicole’s favourite movements, and one that she has been working hard on to improve, and it shows! Nicole is able to bang out big sets, and has started choosing the #14 in workouts :). We’ve never seen someone so excited to see wallballs in a workout!

Nicole also recently competed in the 2019 CrossFit Open this past year for the first time, and she crushed it!

In addition to the physical accomplishments, Nicole’s confidence is through the roof and we could not be more proud! Nicole is determined to prove people wrong, to do things she never thought possible and to lead a healthy and sustainable life. Nicole’s passion for health and fitness, her thirst for knowledge and her drive to be the best version of herself are some of the characteristics we really admire about her.

Nicole is always positive in class, will work with and help others, she never complains about the music choices (and will groove to a good tune), and never stops smiling!

We’re so proud of you Nicole and can’t wait to see what this year has to bring!

Tell us about yourself.
I live in downtown Toronto, right near CrossFit, and work downtown in an office as well. I sold my car soon after moving here 25 years ago and have lived my life on foot ever since. I walk to work and around the neighbourhood to pick up whatever I need at home.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I’m also a runner, and have been running for 15 years. I run warm or cold, wet or dry, my only limits are below minus 20 and above plus 30 degrees. I’ve also run 3 half marathons.

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I’m coming up to 3 years at CF6S in June!

Why did you start CrossFit?
I tried it at the old location and realized that it’s the type of exercise I love to do, but didn’t know existed.

What is your favorite music to workout to?
I love classic rock – we recently worked out to AC/DC, it was great.

What is your proudest CF moment?
My proudest moment was when I broke my previous PB of 50 wall balls, and did 100 (over the course of the workout).

What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
Inside the gym, I notice a lot of improvement in my strength. I think the positivity and friendliness I experience at CrossFit carry over to my life outside the gym, and it’s nice to have something I enjoy so much in my life. Also, my increased strength is definitely noticeable to me in daily life activities, such as climbing stairs.

For someone just starting at CF6S, what advice would you give them?
It would recommend to keep it up, to not give up. It will take some time to catch on and to feel strong, but you’ll improve if you’re consistent over time.

What is your biggest CF goal right now? How close are you?
I would like to get some more practice on beat swings and get stronger at them. I’m working on it bit by bit. I’m still working on double-unders too, I can do a couple but I’d like to do them continuously.

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
I like to explore the neighbourhood, going to St. Lawrence Market and eating out. I also cook my own food, usually batch cooking on the weekend for the week ahead, so I spend time in my nice, open kitchen, which I enjoy.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Easy answer, I’ve always wished I could fly.
