Athlete of the Month: David Knox

David joined the 6S community 5 months ago and has found exercise as a positive influence on his life, especially during these times! His hard work is paying off as he has been consistently getting stronger and building his cardiorespiratory capacity with each and every workout!

David is an avid cyclist, and has cycled three times from Toronto to Montreal with the Friends for Life Bike Rally!

David, you’re an inspiration!

Tell us about yourself

I was born and raised in Toronto, but as much as I love this city, I love to travel. I have visited every province and provincial capital in Canada – I just need to make it to the territories now! I work in health care in downtown Toronto, with a focus on HIV treatment and prevention.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?

I’m really comfortable in the outdoors. I can build a shelter, start a fire, find water…

How long have you been doing [Functional Fitness]? At 6S?

I’ve been at 6S for about 5 months now.

What is your favorite music to workout to?

Pop: Tove Lo, The Presets, Empire of the Sun, Sneaky Sound System

What is your proudest 6S moment?

I finally got my toes to the bar! Was it pretty? No. But they got there and I was proud.

What impact has 6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?

6S made me fall in love with the gym again. Exercise has had a positive influence on me during the pandemic and has kept me *relatively* sane.

For someone just starting at 6S, what advice would you give them?

Use chalk, it is a gamechanger!

What’s your biggest health & fitness goal right now? How close are you?

I want to continue to see progress in my workouts, lifting heavier weights and continue to improve my cardiorespiratory capacity. I’m improving with every class!

Other than 6S, what do you do for fun?

Cycling

I’ve cycled from Toronto to Montreal three times with the Friends for Life bike Rally.  Reading – I’m in a book club called “The Boozy Boys Book Club”. Music – before the pandemic I went to lots of concerts. I saw Blondie a few years ago and they were spectacular!

Who inspires you?

I feel very grateful for and inspired by all frontline health care workers who continue to sacrifice their own health to care for others during this pandemic.

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?

Okay well, while we’re on the topic of personal finance let me explain to you in a single quote why I would never max out a credit card: “Every bit of savings is like taking a point in the future that would have been owned by someone else and giving it back to yourself.” – Morgan Housel, The Psychology of Money. But if you *forced* me, I would max it out at a local bookstore.

What’s the strangest talent you have?

I can walk on my toes! It’s pretty grotesque actually.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

Learn how to skateboard, learn Spanish, see Santigold in concert.

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?

The power to not need to sleep. Imagine how much more you could get done with another 8 hours in the day!

You are stranded on a desert island and can only bring one item with you. What would it be and why?

Dental floss.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?

Palm Springs. The desert is a special place for me.
