Athlete of the Month: Melanie Jarcaig

Melanie joined 6S 3.5 years ago and she has been crushing its ever since! She comes to every class with a smile on her face, a few good jokes and a desire to learn. We could not ask for anything more! We’re so proud of you, Mel and look forward to seeing what the next year will bring!

Tell us about yourself.

I’ve lived in Toronto for the last 12 years and lead a small production team at an ad agency.

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?

I am one of the biggest NBA fans you’ll ever meet

How long have you been doing [Functional Fitness]? At 6S?

3 glorious years!

What is your favorite music to workout to?

Hip Hop

What is your favorite workout?

Double unders or squats.

What is your proudest 6S moment?

Participating in my first Open. I was so scared but it was so much fun.  Highly recommend attending 6S events

What impact has 6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?

Wow, where can I even start? 6S has helped me to prioritize myself and my health over everything, it’s the first time in my life I’ve looked forward to going to the gym, it has helped me with looking to improve certain movements as opposed to changing what my body looks like.

For someone just starting at 6S, what advice would you give them?

Set goals from the beginning but don’t be too hard on yourself if it takes you a while to get there.  You’ll be surprised when one day you all of a sudden can do 30 double unders. Also just have fun! The community here is so great and supportive.  Ask for help if you need it!

What’s your biggest health & fitness goal right now? How close are you?

Biggest fitness goal forever and always is to get my pull-up strength.  I’m not close but have invested in some TRX bands so crossing my fingers I’ll have it soon!

Other than 6S, what do you do for fun?

If I could ride my bike for a living I think I truly would.  I’m also an avid reader and love my book club.

What was the best advice you were ever given?

Don’t sweat the small stuff! (Thanks Dad)

What book are you reading right now?

Without You, There is No Us by Suki Kim

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?

Nordstrum! Is a department store cheating?

What’s the strangest talent you have?

Not really strange but I’m great at styling hair. Years of practice on my older sisters!

What are three things still left on your bucket list?

Go to Tokyo, get back into competitive swimming, quit advertising and go back to working in environmentalism/sustainability
