2 Years of CrossFit 6S: 2017 at a glance

On December 5th, 2017, we celebrated 2 years of 6S – yay!! Thank you to everyone who has visited, supported & joined us for this incredible journey. We would not be here without you! To celebrate another year of 6S, we wanted to recap some of the highlights from 2017. We hope you enjoy!

2017 was nothing short of amazing! We tried new things, met new people & got sweaty together more times than we can count. Members and workout buddies quickly became friends and then friends became family. We’ve seen each other at their best and at their worst, and we love them regardless. We’ve laughed and cried together, pushed and supported each other, and most importantly had fun together! In addition to endless lifting sessions, sweaty metcons and post-workout chats, we’ve gotten to know everyone through various social events throughout the year – & damn, do people clean up well! Some of these events included: brunch, Argos football game, BBQ/patio parties, Pursuit OCR, Blue Jays Game, Axe throwing and different CrossFit competitions, to name a few. Not only do we love getting to know people inside of the gym walls, but hanging out with everyone outside of the gym is even better! Plus, it’s always fun showing up to a venue with the fittest crew around!

CrossFit Open 2017
At the end of February, CrossFit 6S took on the CrossFit Open. In our small space, we managed to have 1/3 of our gym sign up and tackle each workout together. Every Friday night for 5 weeks, athletes showcased their hard work and pushed their limits to obtain the best score they could, and then we all celebrated afterwards with drinks and endless laughs. The energy at 6S was through the roof!
Athletes with all experience and skill levels competed – those who had just started CrossFit and those who had been with us since the beginning. We witnessed ALOT of firsts: first pull-ups, first bar muscle-ups, PR lifts, first HSPUs and so on. All athletes worked hard, pushed themselves and walked away better & fitter because of it. We can’t wait to see what another year of hard work looks like when CrossFit 6S tackles the 2018 CrossFit Open in just a couple of months!
Food for 6S
Investing in our members is not only programming and coaching, but it is lifestyle coaching. We truly want to help each and every one of you achieve your goals and reach your full potential.  In this regard, in April of 2017, we launched our nutrition program, Food for 6S, which has been gaining steam ever since! Thank you to everyone for believing in and trusting us with your fitness and nutrition. Since its launch, we have seen improvements in clients’ confidence, performance in the gym, and overall well-being. Not to mention, people seem to get more and more creative with meal options as time passes! Remember that a nutrition plan is a lifestyle, and lifestyles are not supposed to be temporary or boring!

6 Lifts Weightlifting
In June, CrossFit 6S joined forces with 6 Lifts Weightlifting. This resulted in more talent, heavy lifting and supportive people around 6S – how fun!! 6 Lifts is full of athletes with different skill levels and experience (e.g. from beginners to advanced lifters), but they all share a desire and/or curiosity for Olympic Weightlifting and for learning! This partnership has led to an increased interest in Olympic Weightlifting around 6S, numerous PRs & a wealth of knowledge bombs. Not to mention, the end of our Clean & Jerk cycle last week, programmed by 6 Lifts, finished on a high note with everyone hitting weight and technique PRs. This is only the beginning!

Beach WOD
In July, CrossFit 6S sent 6 teams (24 competitors!!) to Collingwood, ON for the weekend to compete in UG Series’ CrossFit Competition: Beach WOD. We had teams in all three divisions and most of the competitors had never competed before! The whole weekend was magical. We had powerlifters doing CrossFit (& lots of cardio), athletes doing pull-ups in competition for the first time and non-swimmers swimming in a workout. Most of the workouts had elements and exercises that athletes had never tried before, but everybody stepped up to the plate, embraced the challenge and crushed it! The camaraderie, teamwork and #crewlove was real. Here’s to doubling the number of competitors next year & winning the prize for the gym with the highest participation (we were SO close last year!!)! If you missed out last year, you have 6 months to get your team together and prepare for this year’s competition!

Hank’s Powerhouse
In September, we officially launched our powerlifting program: Hank’s Powerhouse, Hank’s Powerhouse is all about getting people STRONG! The programming is partially individualized to target personal weaknesses and turn them into strengths. The class atmosphere helps keep everyone accountable and maintains a supportive and positive atmosphere to foster continual growth. Whether your goals are to compete in powerlifting, to speed up recovery, to learn something new and/or to get strong and make those thrusters feel lighter in metcons, then look no further! Under Hank’s watchful eye, Hank’s Powerhouse has witnessed members get stronger everyday, hitting PRs on the squat, bench press and deadlift, in training and in competition!

6S Underground Throwdown
In November we hosted our first ever members competition: 6S Underground Throwdown. We had 8 teams of 4 compete – dressed in various costumes, lifting heavy weights and exercise racing, really fast. Competitors didn’t know the WODs in advance, so they had to strategize and play to each other’s strengths if they wanted to come out on top! All of the teams worked really hard, moved really fast and looked stellar doing it. The entire day was filled with athletes cheering each other on and supporting one another as they crushed new PRs (& PR faces). Thank you again to all of our judges, volunteers, sponsors and spectators for making this event possible! If you missed out this year, make sure to join the action next year! For more details about the event, make sure to check out our earlier blog post where we recap the whole event!

2017 has been nothing short of amazing. We are truly blessed with the most supportive, patient, caring and hard-working members. Thank you for always welcoming new members into the family, for demonstrating compassion and sportsmanship even when you’re dripping sweat after a workout and for always showing up and working your hardest. 2017 will definitely be hard to top, but we’re confident with all of you in our corner, 2018 will easily be the best year yet!
