Athlete of the Month – Mike Bozzo

Mike joined 6S not long before the February 2019 Open began. While being athletic most of his life, Mike had never tried CrossFit, but you would have never guessed it given how much and how fast he has progressed since he first joined! However, it’s less his quantitative progress and more about his caring, supportive personality which we admire most. Mike will be the first person in your class to cheer you on, the first to say hi to a new member who walks into the gym, and the one person you can count on to always make others feel welcome. Not only does Mike embody the core values of 6S inside the gym, but this is also evident in every aspect of his life.
Mike is always willing to try new things and is determined to learn and perfect all that this sport has to offer! When he’s not crushing handstand walks and muscle ups during open gym, you can catch him in the evening classes or at our social events. As a team captain for this year’s 6S Basement Battle League, Mike immediately rose to the occasion and brought his team together. This is just one example, but there are several in which Mike has embodied all of the characteristics of a great team leader and role model.

When he’s not crushing it in the gym, you can catch Mike scuba diving, hiking or speeding through obstacle course races.

We’re so lucky to have such a caring, supportive, motivated and friendly member and friend at 6S! Thank you for being you, Mike Bozzo! We can’t wait to see what this year has in store for you!

Tell us about yourself.
I am a Chartered Professional Accountant by day and CrossFit Athlete by night. Living an active lifestyle has always been a huge part of me. I’m a tennis player, advanced open water scuba diver, rock climber, and active hiker. I have traveled to over 33 countries and plan on exploring Australia next!
What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you?
I recently did a hike up to the famous Stairway to Heaven in Hawaii. Look them up!
How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I have been doing CrossFit for about 10 months at CF6S. My CrossFit journey began at 6S.
Why did you start CrossFit?
I started CrossFit partly out of curiosity and partly because my boyfriend convinced me to give it a try!
What’s your favorite music to workout to?
EDM, House, and any sort of Pop Remixed. Something with a good beat!
What’s your favorite workout?
Anything with Bar Muscle Ups!
What is your proudest CF moment?
Last month, I got my first Ring Muscle Up. It was a total surprise, but I’m so proud!
What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
I have met such a wonderful, supportive, fun, hilarious, motivating, and fit family here at 6S since joining. The gym and community have had a significant positive effect on me both emotionally and physically. I feel stronger, look better, and have made some amazing friends along the way.
For someone just starting at CF6S, what advice would you give them?
Take advantage of everything 6S has to offer; stay for the stretches, go to the open gym to work on movements that might not come naturally to you, and most importantly – listen to the coaches’ critiques/ suggestions.
What’s your biggest CF goal right now? How close are you?
My biggest CF goal is to lift heavier! My current PR’s for a lot of overhead movements is 165-170lbs and I’m hoping to break through this barrier.
Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
Tons of things! My top three must be hiking somewhere new, swimming in the lake, and trying out new escape rooms.

2 Truths and a lie about you
I went Skydiving over Toronto.
I went bungee jumping in Whistler.
I went white water rafting in New Zealand.

What was the best advice you were ever given?
Someone once told me “don’t ever stop learning and growing as a person” and that has resonated with me ever since.
Who inspires you?
My mom. She is the strongest person I know.
What are you known for?
My horrible, but extremely entertaining, dance moves at the club.

Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman?
