Athlete of the Month – Natalie Dykes

Natalie joined CrossFit 6S 2 years ago (with some prior CrossFit experience), and ever since then she has immersed herself in the 6S community and never stopped setting new goals and crushing them. Natalie is always supportive and optimistic, and will always lend a hand to those around her. You’ll easily spot her in the morning class WOD or in the evening open gym sessions working on her 6S-sory game – she’s constantly smiling, laughing and cheering on those around her. In addition to working on her fitness getting sweaty, Natalie has worked with Food for 6S and dialed in her nutrition to make sure she’s fueling her body properly.

Natalie’s spirit really shined during the 2018 CrossFit Open. She supported her entire team and all of the other competitors. She went above and beyond what was expected. Her camaraderie and charisma are part of what make Natalie a great role model. Additionally, Natalie’s dedication to improving her health and fitness is contagious and her commitment to the 6S community is admirable.

Keep up the great work, Natalie! We’re so lucky to have you!

What is one thing people may be surprised to learn about you
That I did my Masters degree in the Netherlands? Or maybe people know that – I’m a pretty open book!

How long have you been doing CrossFit? At CF6S?
I’ve been doing Crossfit for about 2 and half years – 2 years at CF6S. I just had my 2 years anniversary with CF6S a couple weeks ago

Why did you start CrossFit?
I needed to get back into a regular exercise regime. Some friends convinced me to try it, even though I was super intimidated by Crossfit. I’m so glad they convinced me – I’m hooked and won’t ever give it up

What’s your favorite music to workout to?
Usually pop. Something with a good beat.

What’s your favorite workout?
I like anything with lots of different movements (to keep it more interesting). I like workouts with barbells and lifting vs. more gymnastics movements.

What is your proudest CF moment?
I’m not sure I have one specific moment – all my improvements have been slow and gradual for the most part, I don’t realize how far I’ve come until I start thinking back to my early days. I’m proud of the fact that I can safely look up the workouts in advance and not be worried I will cherry-pick them and skip the ones I don’t like. I used to have to not look! Hopefully, I’ll soon be able to say my proudest moment is my first pull-up – I’m working hard to get pull-ups so I’ll be really proud when I get there.

What impact has CF6S had on your life inside and outside the gym?
CF6S is probably the single biggest reason I feel so at home in Toronto. Being fairly new to the city, it is the source of most of my closest friendships in Toronto, a huge part of my social life, and usually my favourite part of the day. That’s not to mention the huge difference I’ve noticed in my health and wellbeing since becoming so dedicated to CrossFit.

Other than CrossFit, what do you do for fun?
Travel! I love traveling and exploring new places. I also love socializing and spending times with friends – and my ideal situation is combining the two. I often try to plan trips to visit long-distance friends or to meet those friends in new destinations. I also love food – exploring new restaurants is another favourite thing. I’m definitely someone who works out to eat!

2 Truths and a lie about you
I have lived in 6 countries
I had laser eye surgery
I got lost in rural Bosnia and was rescued by a truck driver

What was the best advice you were ever given?
That’s a tough one. I’m not so sure it was advice, but I would say it is the work-ethic my parents instilled in me. Also, “under-promise, over-deliver”. Sticking by that has served me really well.

What is the funniest thing that has happened to you recently?
I have no idea – this is a hard question!

At which store would you like to max-out your credit card?
I’m not a big shopper to be honest – and maxing my card would give me too much anxiety! The biggest risk of maxing my card would be online booking travel and adventures though.

Choose a movie title for the story of your life.
I don’t think my life is interesting enough to have a movie title. Probably something corny like “On the road again” since I’ve moved to so many new places.

What’s the strangest talent you have?
Where did you guys get these questions? So hard! My humble list of talents all seem pretty normal to me.

What are three things still left on your bucket list?
My bucket list is way longer than 3 things. Visiting most of the countries in the world is on there. Helicopter ride in some sort of mountains. I think I might want to be crazy enough to do a triathlon one day (even though I hate running).

If you could have any one superpower, which would you choose?
Probably to be able to eat whatever I want with no consequences! Lol.
